LOCAL INFORMATION

Cape Coral and Fort Myers

Fort Myers

is a beautiful city of broad, palm-lined avenues along the Caloosahatchee River in southwest Florida. It began as a raucous cow town until inventor Thomas Edison came here in 1885 to regain his health. He planted lush tropical gardens and royal palms in front of the properties along McGregor Blvd., once a cow trail leading from town to the docks at Punta Rassa. The trees gave the town its’ nickname, “The City of Palms.” Today, the homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford are two of the biggest attractions in the city, and guided tours of the homes are available year round. There are also river cruises available down the Caloosahatchee on a replica of Edison’s “Reliance.” Other Fort Myers attractions include the Fort Myers Historical Museum, Burroughs Home, the Imaginarium, a “hands-on” museum for all ages, and the Fort Myers Yacht Basin. The Seminole Gulf Railway is the original railroad that ran between Fort Myers and Naples, and today you can take a dinner excursion and sightseeing trip onboard the train. There are also twilight and “murder mystery” train runs. Fort Myers has fishing, boating, sailing, hiking, biking and golf. The town is just a short drive to the white sand beaches of Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva Islands, and the gorgeous Lover’s Key State Recreational Area. A forty-minute drive takes you to the trendy city of Naples.

Cape Coral is a very pretty city located in sunny, southwest Florida on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. Just west of Fort Myers, Cape Coral has hundreds of miles of gorgeous deep-blue canals flowing into the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the largest waterfront communities, as well as one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Florida. The popular shelling beaches of Captiva and Sanibel Islands are just minutes away, and several local and state parks offer fishing, boating, swimming and snorkeling. Hiking, biking, golf and tennis are also available in the Cape Coral area. The city of Cape Coral is home to a children’s science center, as well as a fun, family water park. Several special events are held here throughout the year, including the annual Festival of the Arts, usually held in January, plus an Oktoberfest in the fall. The beautiful beaches of Fort Myers are just minutes away, and the Florida Everglades is approximately an hour’s drive from Cape Coral. One very unique aspect of the city is that it has one of the largest Burrowing Owl populations in the country. During nesting season you will see these little owls sitting on perches along the city streets.

Southwest Florida

weather is one of the area's biggest assets. The region surrounding Fort Myers and Captiva/Sanibel Island is balmy in April and May, hot and humid (but bearable) June through September, and mild and sunny the rest of the year. The rainy season is June through September, with lots of showers and thunderstorms. The number of days without rain in the summer averages about 15. Late summer is hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico. The winter months, when it is drier with less humidity and almost perfect temperatures, is a great time to enjoy southwest Florida's weather. The white sand beaches of the Gulf and the nearby Caloosahatchee River provide visitors and residents plenty of scenic opportunities to enjoy this wonderful weather, also.
